Architectural Resilience:
Single-Ply Roof & Metal Panel Wall Systems

Course Description: KRW-1-2026: Learning Credit, AIA 1.0 LU / HSW Hour
“Architectural Resilience: Single-Ply Roof & Metal Panel Wall Systems” is a 60-minute continuing education course that examines how resilient roofing and wall assemblies contribute to durable, high-performance building envelopes that protect occupant health, safety, and welfare in response to increasing climate and environmental stressors. The course focuses on single-ply roofing membranes (TPO, PVC/KEE, EPDM) and architectural metal panel wall systems, emphasizing material science, attachment and securement strategies, testing standards, and critical detailing practices that influence envelope integrity and long-term building performance.
Participants will evaluate common failure modes, resilient design strategies, and system-level interfaces, including: roof-to-wall transitions, perimeters, and expansion zones that directly impact moisture control, wind resistance, fire performance, thermal stability, and overall occupant protection. By addressing envelope continuity and reducing the risk of water intrusion, air leakage, and structural failure, these design strategies support healthier indoor environments, improved occupant comfort, and building functionality during and after extreme weather events.

Relevant industry standards and guidelines, including ASTM, FM Global, ASCE 7, NRCA, FEMA, and IBHS resources, are reviewed to support performance-based specification decisions that enhance durability, adaptability, lifecycle value, and occupant safety.

Following this course, attendees will be able to understand architectural resilience in roofing and cladding systems, including the following:

  • Explain how resilient roof and wall system design enhances occupant safety, indoor environmental quality, and building continuity under changing climate and environmental conditions.
  • Compare performance attributes of single-ply membranes and metal wall panels.
  • Identify failure modes and resilient envelope design strategies.
  • Examine testing, codes, and specifications that influence resilient design strategies.
