A117.1 Accessible and Useable Buildings and Facilities Standard 
Understanding Current changes and it’s importance to the A&E Community

The International Building Code is the primary design basis for Architects and Engineers to safeguard the public and establishes the minimum requirements for the standards of practice in design. A117.1 is an integral part of the IBC and takes the language from the ADA and other federal standards and incorporates it into Chapter 11 of the IBC. This program will help design professionals understand what A117.1 Accessible and Useable Buildings and Facilities Standard is, why ICC helped create it and their intent.

John currently serves as a project manager with Canizaro Cawthon Davis, Architects in Jackson, Ms. He has been in the industry for over 40 years and has completed over 200 commercial projects. He has worked on a variety of building types including food service, government, education, religious, business and healthcare. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in Architecture. Upon graduation he served a stint in the Army, with combat engineers deployed abroad executing a variety of operations and construction on four different continents and over 70 various projects. While in the service he obtained the rank of Captain (promotable to Major), was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Since leaving the service in 1990, he has worked for a variety of firms while performing a range of duties including but not limited to, programming, master planning, schematic design, design development, construction documents and contract administration. Over the course of his career, he has used and mastered a variety of CAD programs including FastCAD, VersaCAD, Microstation, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, and several iterations of Revit. John has been an extremely active member in CSI, has held multiple positions at both the Chapter and Region level including serving as Chapter President multiple times, Vice President and President of the Gulf States Region. John has been awarded the Eugene Wetzel Award for Communication Excellence, the Robert V. Bishop Award (the GSRs highest award), and the Institute’s Outstanding Contributions Award. John has led numerous presentations, published over 30 articles, and written a variety of technical articles on subjects such as Shop Drawings, Effective Communications, Time Management and Technical Services.
